The municipality of Hekelgem bought the wood processing company "Boplaco", which was converted into a municipal administrative center "Bellekouter". This centre was officially inaugurated on 1 December 1979.
In 1980 the municipality name "Hekelgem" was officially changed to "Affligem". Since then, major changes have been made to the municipal centre, such as the construction of the police building with warehouses (1981), the sports hall "Bellekouter" and the Cultural Centre "Sanderus" (1999). On the roof statues of Patrick Van Craenenbroeck: "I, you, we".
