Droste factory

The Droste roastery is a former building for roasting cocoa beans, located by the Spaarne River in Haarlem. The property, along with the adjacent packaging facility, has significant cultural and historical value and is therefore a national monument.

The roastery was designed in 1911 by the Haarlem architect Jacob van den Ban and has a rectangular shape. The building is constructed with a steel frame and features a symmetrical facade with five windows. At the top of the facade, there is a tile tableau displaying the text 'DROSTE CACAO'. The building remained in use as part of the Droste chocolate factory until September 2004.

The adjacent packaging facility, which was designed in 1922 by Johannes Jacobus van Noppen, is also part of the national monument. In the tower on the southwest side of this packaging facility, there is a colorful tile tableau depicting the famous Droste nurse, who carries a cup of hot chocolate on a tray. This image, likely designed by Johannes Misset, became known through its use on Droste products and packaging and is internationally recognized as the droste effect.
