The Anneessen Tower, also known as Hoek Tower, is a remnant of the first city walls of Brussels. It was constructed in the 13th century and served as a watchtower. The tower is characterized by the octagonal staircase turret and contains two floors. Since 1992, it has been a protected monument, although it is not open to the public (wikipedia, n.d.)
According to tradition, Frans Anneessen was supposedly held captive here for six months along with four other deans before being sentenced to death. Although the tower owes its name to this event, this is not true. Anneessens was imprisoned in the nearby Steenpoort, which also served as a prison at the time. However, the Anneessen Tower and the Steenpoort were connected by a passage.
