A fleet of wind-turbine parks has been put to work in the south of the canton since the start of new millennium. There are 25 wind turbines in all, located in the districts of Amel, Büllingen/Bütgenbach, St. Vith and Weismes, together generating 50,000 kW of power.
New settlements around the contentious wind-power plants elicited fierce controversy among the public; an area had to be set aside as a sanctuary for some species of bird, such as the red kite. The sustainability of the whole is to be encouraged by means of citizens' stakeholdings through co-operative associations.
