AzureThis themed tour takes you along the oldest canal in Flanders. From the very beginning of the city of Ghent at the mouth of the Lys in the Scheldt, a faster way out to the sea was sought. The Lieve is the first dug canal in Flanders that had to provide the proud city of Ghent with a fast sailing connection with the former Zwin estuary as far as Damme. In Lovendegem, Waarschoot and Zomergem this 'Liefken' flows like a picturesque canal where fishermen and herons rule. Behind this romantic landscape lies medieval economic history, in which the conflict between Ghent and Bruges is central.
