De Lieve tells

This themed tour takes you along the oldest canal in Flanders. From the very beginning of the city of Ghent at the mouth of the Lys in the Scheldt, a faster way out to the sea was sought. The Lieve is the first dug canal in Flanders that had to provide the proud city of Ghent with a fast sailing connection with the former Zwin estuary as far as Damme. In Lovendegem, Waarschoot and Zomergem this 'Liefken' flows like a picturesque canal where fishermen and herons rule. Behind this romantic landscape lies medieval economic history, in which the conflict between Ghent and Bruges is central.
