Warande walk in Tervuren

Tervuren, on the northeastern side of the Sonian Forest, is not unknown to many because of the Museum for Central Africa, built under King Leopld II.
However, the Dukes of Brabant built a house here as early as 1190, which would later grow into a powerful castle. In the beginning of the 17th century, the Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella would also have liked to stay here. They had the castle rebuilt. In the 18th century it was inhabited by Charles of Lorraine. He made it his summer residence after he had grand embellishments made there. After his death, it was demolished under the reign of Emperor Joseph II. However, Tervuren did not lose its function as a 'royal residence'. In 1822, Prince Willem-Frederik of the Netherlands moved into a newly built pavilion. After it was ravaged by fire, King Leopold II had the Colonial Palace erected on the same spot, from which the Central Africa Museum later grew. He also had an arboretum built in the Capuchin Forest.

Tervuren is therefore a place with history.
