Ponte do Porto is one of the strategic hubs of the Terras de Soneira region. Its origins are possibly related to a per loca maritima Roman road, a crossing point for goods between coast and hinterland, that also provided ships with shelter against bad weather and invaders.
It is named after the stone bridge connecting the groups of houses by the Grande river. It is a masonry bridge with slightly rounded arches, with columns the height of a person and laybys.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, most of the exporters of Camariñas lace to the Americas, most noticeably Manuel Miñones and Norbeto Noya Mira, set up their operations in Ponte do Porto. Along the PR G-37 Route of the mills in the Lamastredo river and in Xaviña, you can visit the sawmills and private and "maquía" mills, also of significant importance.
TOPOGRAPHICAL GUIDE
At present, the old stone houses by the river are memories of a bygone era. The Ethnographic Museum, emerging from a private and popular initiative, is a reflection of the tools and trades of those times.
