The route starts at the hikers' car park along the main road between Saelhuysen and Schaephuysen and runs counterclockwise. 49% of the route runs on gravel roads over the Schaephuysen heights, through woodland around old arms of the Rhine (called Kuhlen) and over the minestone slag heap in northern Germany. See the route description below for all gravel strips and their length in kilometers. The proportion of gravel roads is greater than the routeThey indicate, because the road surface on maps in this area does not always correspond to reality. The route can be divided into six sections (starting from the indicated hiking parking lot):
(1) - over the Schaephuyser heights south of Schaephuysen with, among other things, the (gravel) ascent of the Windberg,
(2) - through the Tannenbusch forest area and past Bloemersheim Castle on many gravel roads,
(3) - a 9 km long section on asphalt through predominantly agricultural land to Halde Norddeutschland,
(4) - more than six kilometers of gravel roads over the Minensteinberg Halde northern Germany, including a gravel climb (which briefly reaches 11% climb) and beautiful views from the top of the mine stone,
(5) - through agricultural land, over the short steep Rayenberg (11%) and through forest areas (Rheurdt State Fort and Vluynbusch Nature Reserve) and along old arms of the Rhine (which are often difficult to see due to dense vegetation).
(6) - and over the Schaephuysen heights north of Schaephuysen with, among other things, the ascent of the Oermter mountain, partly concrete slabs of the road surface and hollow roads.
This makes for a very varied gravel ride with different landscapes. The gravel roads are mostly good (i.e. easy to drive on even after rainy seasons).
Please note: Halde Norddeutschland is also the venue for some summer festivals (Dong Open Air, Heaven & Hill Festival), on the festival days the Bergberg may not be accessible.
