Cadzand (formerly Cadesand) is one of the oldest settlements in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. It was located on an island near the Zwin, and was surrounded by a "quay" (dike). During the storm surges in 1394 and 1398 (St. Elisabeth flood), large parts of the "island of Cadzand" disappeared back into the sea and were re-diked.
Cadzand is an early medieval ring village, the houses concentrated around the early Gothic (Catholic) church from the beginning of the fourteenth century. The church was restored several times and passed into Protestant hands in the 17th century. It is a two-aisled "hall church", in which the transition from Romanesque style to Gothic is still visible. The original large tower was demolished in 1677 and replaced by a wooden "roof rider". In 1930 the current ornate tower was built by the municipality of Cadzand.
