The abbey "Notre Dame du Val-Dieu" in the heart of the Herver region is a monastery of the Cistercian order and the starting point for this approximately 10 km long hike, which consists of the two regional circular trails "Balade de Saint-Jean-Sart" and "Balade du Chemin du Diable." Along the hike, hedges, hollow ways, and pastures alternate with small woods and quaint villages and farmhouses. The abbey was founded in 1216 by Cistercian monks in the valley of Berwinne, which then bore the name "Devil's Valley." To counteract the bad omen, they renamed the abbey and the valley Val-Dieu – the Valley of God. A guided tour of the monastery is possible upon request. Both the monastery's snack bar "Casse-Croûte" and the restaurant "La Bistronomie" in the adjacent mill (www.moulinduvaldieu.be) offer the possibility of dining.
