En el siglo XIII, Marken fue separado del continente durante tormentas. Siguió un período de aislamiento que duró siglos para los habitantes, que vivían de la pesca. No fue hasta 1957 que Marken fue conectado al continente por una dike y desde entonces es una península.
Para protegerse contra las inundaciones, los habitantes construyeron hasta el siglo XVII sus característicos (verdes) casas de madera sobre montículos, que ellos mismos llamaban ‘werven’. Después, las casas se construyeron sobre pilotes.
Tras la construcción de la Afsluitdijk (1932), la isla ya no ha tenido que enfrentarse a inundaciones, pero las casas típicas han permanecido.
