Das Schloss Hohentübingen liegt zentral in der Stadt Tübingen auf einem Bergsporn. Es wurde ab dem 11. Jahrhundert erbaut, im 16. Jahrhundert erweitert und stellt in seiner heutigen Form eine Mischung aus mittelalterlicher Burg, neuzeitlichem Schloss sowie Festung dar.
Vermutlich wurde die Burg Hohentübingen um 1037 erbaut; nach Weiß wurden die „… steinernen Wälle … allerdings erst im Laufe des 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts errichtet, zuvor war die Burg nur mit Holzpalisaden umgeben.“ Im Jahre 1078 wurde das Bauwerk erstmals schriftlich erwähnt: Die Zwiefaltener Annalen beschreiben die Belagerung einer Burg „Duwingen“ durch König Heinrich IV. im Verlauf des Investiturstreites; gleichzeitig wird ein gewisser Graf Hugo III. von Tübingen in „… einer weiteren Quelle …“ erwähnt.
