Saint Peter's Church

The Treasure Chamber of St. Peter is located in St. Peter's Church. Two masterpieces (15th century) by the Flemish Master Dirk Bouts, namely The Last Supper and The Martyrdom of St. Erasmus, can be seen here. The choir and the rectory of St. Peter's Church house the treasure chest. Here you will find not only a number of rare religious objects in precious metals. In the radiant chapels, there are also many paintings and sculptures, such as the lesser-known masterpieces of Jodocus van der Baren, Jan van Rillaer, and Pieter-Jozef Verhaghen. They were commissioned by the guilds and brotherhoods between the 15th and 18th centuries when they took over the care of the chapels. Three works by the so-called Flemish primitives are the real gems of the crown. The triptych of Edelheer is the most contemporary and thus oldest copy of the Deposition of Christ made by Rogier van der Weyden for a chapel in Leuven. The most famous panel is undoubtedly The Last Supper by Dirk Bouts. In 1464, this city painter of Leuven was commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Holy Sacrament to paint a triptych for their chapel in St. Peter's Church that represents the ordering of the Eucharist. Bouts made this his absolute masterpiece. The Martyrdom of St. Erasmus in the adjacent chapel was also made by Dirk Bouts at the request of the Brotherhood.
