High-flying with goat riders
On this tour, we are soaring to great heights, even without the billy goats of the legendary gang of robbers. On the way to Hofstadt, the loess plateau arches into a slight but widely visible elevation. An ideal gallows location, where some alleged goat riders met a sad end after forced confessions. While hiking, we come across farms dating back to the 17th century, one of which is said to have been a meeting point for the gang. At the Old Rectory in Alt-Merkstein, a moat bears witness to the necessity of protecting oneself against raids, and old goat rider family names can be found on the tombstones in the cemetery. During the high-flying hike over Hochfeld, 20 church spires can be spotted on the horizon. And those who climb the 260 meters of the Halde Adolf have conquered the highest peak in the region.
