Delta Schuitenbeek

Delta Schuitenbeek is in a nature reserve of 57.8 hectares between Nulderhoek and Nijkerkersluis in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The fringe lakes became increasingly polluted with phosphates and nitrates in the twentieth century, leading to significant algal growth. To counteract this growth, the mouth of the Schuitenbeek was relocated between 2001-2002. Rijkswaterstaat constructed a new diversion dike on the south side of the Nuldernauw along the existing old Zuiderzeedijk, with a length of almost 3,800 meters. Several islands have been created in the elongated area between the two dikes. The low dam ensures that the water in the swamp does not come into contact with the Nuldernauw. The width of the delta varies between 40 and 300 meters. After the mouth of the Schuitenbeek was relocated, the phosphate and nitrate-polluted stream water no longer flows directly into the Nuldernauw but travels through the delta towards the Nijkerkersluis. This should create a swamp area in the delta where the polluted water from the Schuitenbeek flows towards the Wolderwijd and the Nuldernauw. The newly formed nature reserve is part of the Ecological Main Structure.
