The Sheepfold - Round Smaldonk

Especially for the Sheepfold in Schijndel, we are creating a series of walks with the Sheepfold as the starting and ending point. The sheepfold is one of the most beautiful spots in Schijndel. In addition to the typical cultural heritage that has been reconstructed here, it is mainly the unique inhabitants (the sheep, of course) that invite you to visit this special location. You can also admire several unique buildings here, such as an authentic Flemish barn, a converted cart shed, and a haystack with a roofed shed.

The Smaldonk is the area between Schijndel and the nature reserve the Wijboschbroek. It is a beautiful walking area with breeding ponds, willows, hedges, and wooded banks. The small grasslands are surrounded by pollard willows. In the meadows managed by Staatsbosbeheer, the Lakenvelders graze. Plant species such as the Daisy and the True Buttercup are common here. The area is rich in amphibians.

The end of the walk goes through a part of the Wijboschbroek. The Wijboschbroek used to be an area with swamp forests. Over time, the trees were cut down, and fields were established. But as the name says: it remained a marsh, a wet area. At the end of the 19th century, the farmers gave up, elevations were made, and trees were replanted. The beginning of the Wijboschbroek as we know it now.
