Mähring

Mähring is a market town in the Tirschenreuth district of Upper Palatinate. Mähring is located in the northern part of the Upper Palatinate in Stiftland, at the border with the Czech Republic, by the Lohbach, a tributary of the Mies.

The municipal territory of Mähring is traversed by the European watershed divide. This divides it into two unequal parts, with the significantly larger part lying to the west of the watershed. This part also includes the seat of the municipal administration, which is located in Großkonreuth. Only the main town of the municipality, the hamlet of Treppenstein, and the isolated farm of Neumühle lie to the east of the watershed. The only accessed routes from the German road network are the state road 2167 and state road 2175. Since these two roads cross the European watershed at just under or over 700 meters, there are often weather-related road closures in snowy winters. Until the fall of the Iron Curtain, this occasionally meant that the remote area was temporarily cut off from the Federal Republic. This situation was not unlike the circumstances in the Spanish Val d’Aran, which had been inaccessible from the rest of Spain until the construction of a tunnel during the winter months.
