Ruhrhaldenweg, Stage 12: Lohberg - Halde Haniel

The Ruhrhaldenweg is a 580 km long long-distance hiking trail that connects the dump sites, garden cities, and former mines of the Ruhr metropolis. A chain of footpaths, towing paths, small and large roads, upgraded railway tracks, and dump trails leads you through the entire Ruhr area, from Moers and Duisburg in the west to Dortmund and Bergkamen in the east.
This twelfth stage starts in the mining town of Lohberg and leads past the dump of the same name and the Rotbach valley to the expansive nature reserves of Kirchheller Heide and Hiesfelder Wald. For kilometers, you hike along a rugged forest path next to the equally rugged Rotbach, ultimately reaching the Halde Haniel. This mighty dump is 184 m high, and an open-air theater has been built on it. From the upper floor, you have one of the most beautiful views of the Ruhr area.
