La Plaça de George Orwell de Barcelona rep el seu nom del novel·lista i assagista anglès George Orwell.
El jove Orwell participà l'any 1936 en la darrera Guerra Civil Espanyola al costat de les milícies internacionals del POUM i fou ferit greument, tal com explica en el seu llibre Homenatge a Catalunya. La seua millor obra literària és l'al·legoria política La rebel·lió dels animals, una ferotge crítica al sistema comunista i estalinista, que va escriure a conseqüència de la persecució a què el van sotmetre els comunistes estalinistes després d'ésser ferit en batalla.
