Akademiet blev grundlagt af Platon omkring 387 f.Kr. i Athen. Aristoteles studerede der i tyve år, før han grundlagde sin egen skole, Lyceum. Akademiet bestod gennem den hellenistiske periode som en skeptisk skole, indtil det ophørte efter Philo fra Larissas død i 83 f.Kr. Den platoniske akademi blev ødelagt af den romerske diktator Sulla i 86 f.Kr.
