Rickenbach is a district of the Vorarlberg market town of Wolfurt. The settlement is named after the watercourse Rickenbach and was the original site of the cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr.
When in 1806 the centuries-old administration of the region by the Lower Court Hofsteig was abolished by the Bavarian occupation, the municipality of Wolfurt was established in its present form. Until then, Rickenbach had considered itself an independent place – the annexation to Wolfurt was unpopular among the Rickenbach residents. The Rickenbachers criticized the long walk to the Wolfurt church and campaigned for the construction of a new Wolfurt parish church on the border between Rickenbach and Wolfurt. In 1831, a vote was held on the church's new construction, which the Rickenbachers lost. Therefore, between 1884 and 1887, the Rickenbachers built the St. Joseph's chapel. The building in neo-Gothic style was extensively renovated in 1973 and 1974. In the chapel hangs the painting "Saint Philomena" by the Nazarene painter Gebhard Flatz, who comes from Rickenbach.
