Reith Traunsteiner Hut

Mountain hike in the tri-border region Austria / Germany

The tour starts in Reith, Austria, at a small parking lot at Donnersbach.
From there, a quiet forest road leads up to the Alpasteig, a steep stair-like rock path to Alpa Alm. Enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the dark pine forest. On the left side of the wooden hut, there is a wooden table and a bench where you can have a nice picnic and enjoy the great view of the mountains.

Reiter Alm, where time seems to stand still

To the right, it continues steeply up to the Reiter Alm. From the summit (Guggenbichl), there is a great panorama of the Reiter Alm and in the distance, the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte. The hike to the hut across the plateau is easy and not complicated.

The Schrecksattel.
This area is also used by the military, so you may see some military activities. It continues to the Schrecksteig, a narrow rock path steeply down into the forest. The landscape along the Schrecksteig is breathtaking and leads you along gigantic rock walls where climbers can unleash themselves. It is one of the most spectacular routes in Tyrol.

Exhausting final section of the Route of the Klammen

At one point, it is possible to follow a shortcut to the Route of the Klammen. On this path, you will eventually reach the starting point in Reith via a marked mountain bike path.
You follow this mountain bike trail along the Eibkendlbach until you land on the road to Reith (Route of the Klammen).
It is a nice journey, but it can feel longer than it actually is.

This part of the Chiemgau Alps still feels very quiet. In the off-season, you will not encounter many other trekkers on the trekking routes. Only the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte is rather busy, as several routes converge here. Make sure to bring enough water and snacks, as the road between the Schrecksteig and Reith can feel very long and exhausting and there are no opportunities to eat along the way.
