Here, numerous public transport routes intersect; it is the gateway to the Antwerp fashion district, the historic center, and the shopping area.
The Groenplaats was a cemetery associated with the Cathedral of Our Lady since the Middle Ages. It was not until the end of the eighteenth century that this cemetery was transformed into a square. This happened after Emperor Joseph II banned the use of cemeteries within the city walls.
Currently, the Groenplaats is a large rectangular area with hardly any traffic. On the north side, the tourist train has its stop. Centrally located on the Groenplaats is the statue of Peter Paul Rubens. The raised area around the statue is a popular hangout for Antwerp students and schoolchildren on sunny days.
