While Brussels has one, Ghent has as many as four. On Kraanlei, there stands one proud Manneke Pis, Nestor, and two Meisjes Pis, Lena and Luna.
The bronze statue of Manneke Pis Nestor had been there for a longer time. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Ghent association De Sosseteit van de Gensche Mannekes Pies Twielink, the two girls were added. Lena and Luna, created by artist Stefaan De Visscher, found their place here in 2014 next to Manneke Pis Nestor. The girls owe their names to a real Ghent twin.
With the Meisjes Pis, we also want to highlight the playful and important action of the Ghent nonprofit 'Plasactie.' Since 2004, they have been campaigning to make the toilets at the Ghent Festivities free for both men and women. According to a survey by Plasactie vzw, about 22% of the women present returned home due to a lack of a free place to relieve themselves. Thanks to their campaign, since 2014 everyone can use the toilet for free at the Ghent Festivities.
One more fun fact about Lena and Luna: they can be connected to the water supply, meaning that for the first time in Ghent we have statues that can actually pee.
