Several studies have dated some sculpted details to the 12th century . So it would have been built on an existing temple.
When the Saint-Mort parish was dissolved in 1803, the fabrique de Huy sold the church and cemetery. The buyer sold the intact part of the church to the Hospices Civils , who used it as their chapel . The church was rebuilt in the 13th century . In the Gothic period a transept and two chapels were added covering the Romanesque cemetery adjoining the church and where almost exclusively children's graves could be seen. This is quite exceptional and testifies to the vocation of the site and its attachment, without a doubt, to the legend.
The legend of Saint Mort is known from a 16th century text that tells a story set during the 7th century. A stillborn baby is said to have risen from the dead when presented to the church of Hut , which was then probably dedicated to Saint John. After living as a hermit in the service of the canonesses of Andenne, he was miraculously returned and buried in the same church , where many healing miracles subsequently took place.
This legend led to the development of a special cult towards children and a very popular attachment that is still felt today.
