The "time of Daens" symbolizes the miserable conditions in which workers and farmers lived and worked at the end of the 19th century. Priest Adolf Daens became a symbol of the struggle against this enormous inequality, but he was not alone. His brother Pieter Daens connected him with the Roelanders from the region around Ninove. Together, they founded a new party in 1893 in Okegem, the Christian People's Party. In addition to social reforms to improve the lot of farmers and factory workers, these Christian democrats also advocated for universal single voting rights, compulsory education, and the equality of Dutch and French.
