Lumbs across Limburg into the Meuse region

Pleasant, calming, and particularly varied bike tour through the water-rich and forest-rich Mid-Limburg. The following topics are addressed, among others: the Albert Canal, the Meuse, the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the Briegden-Neerharen Canal, and the Herk River. After a long ride along the car-free riverbanks of the sparkling Albert Canal, we reach the expansive coniferous forests of Zutendaal, a rural oasis in Mid-Limburg. Fortunately, Zutendaal has been spared from large industrial projects that typically involve the exploitation of extensive natural spaces. After this green section, we arrive in the beautiful Limburg Meuse region. Oud-Rekem was chosen as the most beautiful village in Flanders in 2008. Here we find one of the most authentically preserved village centers in Belgium. On car-free bike paths and riverbanks, we now ride along the quiet shores of the Meuse, the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the Briegden-Neerharen Canal, and a very picturesque, deeply carved Albert Canal near Gellik. The vibrant city of Bilzen offers us the opportunity to recharge our batteries in one of the many cozy terraces on the atmospheric marketplace. We continue along car-free roads through the open orchards of the North Haspengouw fruit region and follow the course of the Herk River to finally reach our forest-rich destination Lummen.
This bike tour is almost entirely flat. The route is unmarked and there are a few gravel sections under the wheels.
