Brussels has always been full of small rivers and streams. That is why many place names end in ‘beek’, which is Dutch for ‘stream’. On this walk, you will follow the Maelbeek stream from its source to its confluence. The Maelbeek stream, which is now arched over, used to flow in the open air through numerous meadows and countless ponds, of which only six remain. From the Middle Ages onwards, it encouraged the development of new districts and activities, first agricultural and later industrial, turning many mills along its path. Discover this stream that has greatly influenced the development of the eastern part of the capital.
