Pajottenland, or ‘Land of straw’, a reference to the straw roofs in the region, was one of Breughel’s favourite areas. Its landscapes are typical of the area, with small valleys, often interspersed with small rivers, all of which have a rural, agricultural and idyllic feel. This area is hidden from view from the nearby boulevards, yet it is part of the south-western outskirts of Brussels, a stone's throw from the canal and the industrial areas. What a surprise to literally hop from the city into the deep countryside in an instant, and even walk past many farms that are still operational to this day! Anderlecht is just as unique and unusual, with its religious, industrial, Art Deco and monumental street art heritage. A refreshing country walk full of contrasts not to be missed!
