Dürnten has an area of 10.2 km2 . Of this area, 60.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 17% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 21.4% is settled and the remainder is non-productive . In 1996 housing and buildings made up 13.9% of the total area, while transportation infrastructure made up the rest . Of the total unproductive area, water made up 0.8% of the area. As of 2007 15.4% of the total municipal area was undergoing some type of construction.
The Jona river flows through the municipality. It is located in the south-west side of Bachtel mountain. It includes the villages of Dürnten, Oberdürnten and Tann.
