Abtswind

Abtswind is a market town with around 800 inhabitants in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen and a member of the Wiesentheid administrative community. The town is located at the foot of Friedrichsberg in the west of the Steigerwald Nature Park. Abtswind, which was first mentioned in a document in 783, consisted in the early Middle Ages of the two places Kleinabtswind and Großabtswind. While Kleinabtswind fell into desolation during the Thirty Years' War, the main village continued to develop. The Münsterschwarzach Monastery was the local lord until the 15th century. However, other lords also acquired shares in the small town. Later, Abtswind received its own jurisdiction and was granted the status of a Free Town. Abtswind is characterized by its wine cultivation and the old sandstone houses in the town center.
The town is located at the foot of Friedrichsberg about 40 kilometers south of Schweinfurt, about 16 kilometers east of Kitzingen, and about 50 kilometers west of Bamberg. The university city of Würzburg is 35 kilometers away. At the northern edge of the village, the Kantersbach flows, which merges into the Schoßbach in Rüdenhausen.
