Sachsenhausen was a concentration camp of Nazi Germany during World War II. The camp was located about 35 kilometers from Berlin and was built in 1936 by prisoners. The camp was situated in the Sandhausen neighborhood (now Sachsenhausen, just like the camp itself) in the city of Oranienburg.
About 200,000 people were imprisoned at Sachsenhausen from 1939 to 1945; for the period from 1936 to 1939, no reliable figures are available. According to "official" figures, about 30,000 to 35,000 people died. Among the prisoners were political opponents of Adolf Hitler, Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, gypsies, and prisoners of war.
