The Marine coastal station Marienleuchte is an intelligence facility of the German Navy that was specifically used during the Cold War for locating submarines and other sea vessels in the Baltic Sea and for intercepting military communications. The station is located in Marienleuchte at the northern tip of Fehmarn on the Fehmarn Belt. It is thus situated at the connection from the eastern Baltic Sea to the Kiel Bay and the North Sea.
The name "Marienleuchte" comes from the Danish Queen Marie-Sophie. She named the lighthouse, built in 1832 by the Danish Marine Administration, after herself. In 1864, the island of Fehmarn came under German administration and joined the German Empire in 1871, but the name remained.
