Roman Camp Oberaden

The Roman camp Oberaden is a Roman military camp about 56 hectares in size located in Oberaden, a district of Bergkamen in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The camp, dating from around 11 BC, is part of the context of Drusus' campaigns in Germania.

This multi-legion camp was discovered in 1905 by Pastor Otto Prein, who had already led archaeologists to the trace of the much smaller Roman camp located only 2.5 kilometers to the west in Lünen-Beckinghausen. Initial excavations began in 1906. Under the direction of Gerhard Kropatschek, they continued until 1914. Further excavations took place in 1937 and 1938 under the direction of Christoph Albrecht, and in 1962/1963 as well as since 1976 in continuous succession under the leadership of the Münster archaeologist Johann-Sebastian Kühlborn.
