Burg Ramstein is a medieval castle ruin situated on a sandstone rock in the Kyll Valley. The castle was built in the early 14th century (1320) by Archbishop and Elector of Trier, Diether of Nassau, as a replacement for an earlier fortified manor house.
During the Nine Years' War, the castle was largely destroyed by French troops in 1689 and has not been restored since.
Underneath the castle are secret passages and old cellars , which were used in times of war to escape or store food. The Knight's Passage : According to a local legend, a hidden passage runs from the castle to a nearby cave , where a knight secretly met his beloved. After his death, his ghost is said to still guard the path. Some even believe that an old tunnel led to the Moselle itself — this is not proven , but is part of folklore that has been passed down for generations.
Despite its ruinous state, parts of the defensive walls, corner towers and the medieval residential tower house are still visible. The site is freely accessible to visitors.
