OC 3 - Around Venne - Mill, Bog and Battle of the Teutoburg Forest

The cycle path around Venne - mill, moor, and Varus battle leads through a landscape that is not only perfect for a wonderful family bike tour but also connects some of the most historically interesting sights in the Osnabrück region.

The starting point of the tour is the Venner Mühleninsel in Ostercappeln. The area, already cultivated in the early Middle Ages around the water mill, becomes the center of village life again during the mill and baking days (Whit Monday on Mill Day, on the Day of the Open Monument in September, and for the Harvest Thanksgiving). The "Venner Folk Frühling" in May is also an annual visitor magnet.

You can experience how our Germanic ancestors lived and provided for their daily livelihoods even before the birth of Christ at the Iron Age House. In 2008, a homestead from the pre-Roman Iron Age was reconstructed here. Various activities such as demonstrations in blacksmithing, agriculture, and archery take place on the associated area. Right next door, the farm café Darpvenner Diele invites you to take a short break.

The Museum and Park Kalkriese is another highlight of the tour. Over 2000 years ago, the Germanic tribes were able to defeat the Roman troops under their commander Varus at this location, freeing Germania from Roman occupation. The permanent exhibition on the Varus Battle in the Osnabrück region conveys the historical findings in an entertaining way with a wealth of excavation objects and provides insights into the lives of the Romans and Germanic peoples. A special exhibition takes place every year. Don't miss: In alternate years, two event highlights take place at the Museum and Park Kalkriese with the "Easter Glow" and the "Roman and Germanic Days."
