The Church of San Marcos is located in Calle San Luis , the main street of the Roman city, which would later become the main street of Muslim Seville.
The foundation of this church dates back to the "Repartimiento" carried out by King Fernando III El Santo after the capture of the city in 1248 , on the site of an ancient Islamic mosque , whose minaret tower is still preserved . Due to the conflicts between the ducal houses of Medina Sidonia and Arcos, the church was burned down and rebuilt in 1478 . In 1911 the church was declared a branch of the Parish Church of San Julián and later as a new independent parish.
On July 18 , 1936, the church was burned down and looted and all the furniture disappeared. Its architectural features correspond to the general characteristics of 14th-century parish churches in Gothic-Mudejar style and it is one of the least transformed churches of this group. The interior of the church, with completely white walls, is virtually free of added decorations , further enhancing the beauty of the structural elements.
The tower is also very important , with a very slender square plan, located on the facade. On the outside it has double windows framed by alfiz and decorated with sebka panels, similar to those in other church towers, such as Omnium Sanctorum and the Giralda itself in Seville Cathedral. It corresponds to the minaret of the old mosque that stood on this spot, in front of the church itself. This tower was restored in 1916 by the Sevillian architect Aníbal González.
