Saint-Memmie

Saint-Memmie is a municipality in the French department of Marne. The municipality had 5,474 inhabitants as of January 1, 2019. The place is part of the arrondissement of Châlons-en-Champagne. The place is named after the first bishop of Châlons-en-Champagne, Memmius, who was buried in the territory of the municipality. His relics, along with those of his sister Pome and two of his successors as bishop, were kept in the village church. His grave became a pilgrimage site. The place grew around the Abbey of Saint-Menge. In 1231, Saint-Memmie received a city charter. In 1544, the abbey was destroyed during fighting between French and Habsburg troops. The stones from the abbey were used to build a bastion to defend the nearby Châlons-en-Champagne.
