The town of Schirmeck is dedicated as a "City of Remembrance" and, recently, as a "City of Memory" with the creation of the Alsace-Moselle Memorial and the Memory Trail. Schirmeck owes its name, and probably its creation, to its castle ("Schirmen ecke" or "the corner that protects") which appears for the first time in 1328 under the name of Neufville in Barembach. Throughout its history, the castle fulfilled its role as a protector of the surrounding residents.
