The construction in the 7th century of the Abbey of Saints Peter and Paul enabled the birth and then the prosperity of Wissembourg. To defend itself, the city was surrounded by fortifications and 4 castles. Although only one of the four castles remains, St. Paul Castle, to the north of the city in the vineyard, the abbey and the fortifications are still visible around the historic town.
