Ceuclum, modern Cuijk, was a Roman settlement in the province of Germania Inferior. Ceuclum is mentioned on the Peutingerian Table between Blariacum and Noviomagi.
Ceuclum was founded around the year 50 AD, during the reign of Emperor Claudius, on a hill near the river Meuse, probably by the Roman general Corbulo. Originally it was a wooden fortress with an earthen fence with palisade walls and surrounded by two or three canals. The fort was 120 by 150 meters and was manned by about 500 soldiers. There was also a settlement of citizens in the camp. The fort was probably evacuated at the beginning of the Batavian uprising of 69-70, so it was not destroyed. After the revolt was suppressed, Ceuclum seems to have been abandoned by the army: almost no military artifacts have been found after 70 years.
