The Amstelveld is a square in the center of Amsterdam, between the Reguliersgracht, Prinsengracht, and Kerkstraat, close to the Utrechtsestraat. The Amstelkerk, a predominantly wooden building, stands at the square. The characteristic planting consists of 46 Caucasian wingnut trees.
In 1658, Amsterdam needed to be expanded, and a long street was planned between the Keizers- and Prinsengracht. Along this street, four large spaces for new churches were created. The street was named Kerkstraat, and one of those empty spaces became the Amstelveld.
