The museum is located in a number of historical buildings, including the seventeenth-century structure of the Admiralty of Friesland and Groningen from the period 1618 to 1645.
The museum offers a unique insight into 2000 years of culture in Northeast Friesland, where Boniface, monks, and monasteries hold an important place, as well as old artifacts, folk art, paintings, and Frisian ceramics.
On the opposite side of the adjacent Dokkumer Grootdiep, the museum has the Hellinghûs, a former shipyard of the admiralty.
