The Latin Portus stands for port. Nieuwpoort was next to Schoonhoven a new port on the Lek.
The city was granted city rights as early as 1283. Because of its position on the border of Holland and Sticht Utrecht, it had to endure a lot of struggle. Already in 1402 the troops of Jan van Arkel besieged the city.
The war against Louis XIV, in the 17th century, was the reason for the construction of fortifications according to the improved Old Dutch fortification system. Dozens of buildings were demolished for this purpose. In 1697 the town hall was built, over the harbour, with the inundation lock underneath.
In 1795, the French troops, led by Daendels and Pichegru, conquered the Netherlands, and the fortress lost its function.
