Porters

This cultural route is about the Porters. Hummm... What is this actually about or rather, where is this going?

Porters you say? Ow, this route is going to carry a lot of weight..... So where are those Porters?

The nickname of the Balenaars is: Porters. The reason may be that the patron saint of the church, Saint Andrew, is also patron of the porters. The folktale states that the inhabitants wanted to move the church a number of times, and considered a wheelbarrow suitable for this purpose. In 1987 a statue of the porter was placed. The Porter Museum, in the former town hall, is a local history museum.

The route from Klundert visits beautiful nature reserves around Balen. Via Vossemeren we drive along Bosland and then south of Balen along various nature reserves.

South of Balen runs the Grote Nete and in its valley are various nature reserves, including Scheps, De Most, De Vennen, and Griesbroek near Hulsen. North of De Most lies, on a deck sand ridge, the nature and recreation area Keiheuvel.

Parallel to the Grote Nete run the man-made Grote Hoofdgracht and Kleine Hoofdgracht, intended to drain the marshes.

East of Balen runs the Canal to Beverlo and west of Balen the Canal Dessel-Kwaadmechelen.
