A contemporary sculpture in Largo da Misericórdia depicting King Afonso Henriques, the first Portuguese king.
The contemporary statue of King Afonso Henriques was designed by sculptor João Cutileiro and was placed here in 2001. This statue represents the memory of the past with the imprint and reading of the present. It represents the figure of a soldier , with his sword and shield. It is a statue full of power, with a powerful and confident Afonso Henriques.
There is another monument in honor of the same character in front of the main entrance to the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança.
