Wat Maha That is an old temple of Mueang Phraek or Mueang San, an ancient city likely dating back to the Dvaravati period. Sankha Buri was estalished in 1317 by King Lerthai of Sukhothai. It was an important defensive post in both the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya Kingdoms. King Intharacha of Ayutthaya (reign 1409-1424) nominated his second son Chao Yi Phraya as ruler of Mueang Phraek and changed its name to San Buri. Wat Maha That, also known as Wat Hua Mueang, was built in 1354. The temple houses a ruined chapel with seated Buddha images and a distinguished Lop Buri styled prang. The prang housing Buddha's relics is made of brick and stands on a square shaped base. There is a small museum in situ.
