Because of the high water level, we walked on higher paths. Unfortunately no flamingos spotted today. Here an alternative location where we have seen flamingos.
In the past, Jan Thiel's salt pans, located east of Willemstad, were made to extract salt from seawater. Water from the ocean was directed to the salt pans and then sealed, causing the water to evaporate and leaving the salt behind. Jan Thiel(en) was the first known owner of the important salt plantation Damasco, which was located here in the 18th century. Salt was extracted from seawater. The salt pans are no longer used, but you can still see their structure. They are best known today for the presence of flamingos all year round.
