The Fagne-Famenne region is essentially nothing more than the southernmost depression (up to 20 km wide in some places) of the Condroz. What stands out in the relief is that this region is significantly lower than the other depressions of the Condroz. This is because the subsoil of the Fagne-Famenne consists of schists from the Carboniferous period (hardened clay that can absorb a lot of water). Schists show little resistance to frost. During the ice ages (glacials), it froze here during the long winter months. The water contained in the schists turned to ice. Water that freezes expands and has immense force. As a result, the rock is broken down into smaller pieces (erosion due to freeze-thaw action). During the shorter summers, the massive rivers (which carried large amounts of meltwater) transported those schists away from the region.
